Addiction Counselor Training

by Tammy M
(Kelowna, BC, Canada)

My past had been corrupted with alcohol and drugs, inevitably led to criminal charges leaving me with a criminal record.

Now that I have been clean and sober for a couple years. I have decided to begin a new journey and work toward a diploma in Addiction Counseling.

My question is: Can I look forward to gainful employment prior to a pardon being granted?

Having a criminal record may effect you, depending on the requirements of your program, as well as your future job.

Many programs require you to to internships in addiction settings -- including rehabs -- with mandated clients. You may need clearance for this. You may also have to visit or work in penal institutions or halfway houses. Having a criminal record would present an obstacle.
