Addiction Therapy Works

Addiction therapy using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Cognitive Therapy works for all impulse control behaviors: drugs, alcohol, gambling, compulsive sex, food, shop-lifting, codependency, relationships etc. Here’s what it’s all about

What is Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques are based on the premise that our thoughts determine our thinking, which then determines our attitudes and our actions.

According to the Cognitive Therapy model, which was pioneered by Dr. Aaron Beck, the client learns to identify his/her negativity and change how they think about a situation.....and once you change your thinking, you also change your feelings as well as your behavior. You learn how to confront the same issues in a whole new empowering way.

These thoughts, attitudes and beliefs are about ourselves, our relationships with other people (living or dead) and the environment around us. According to the Cognitive Behavioral Modal we’ve established this thinking early in childhood, but it’s not necessary to dwell on the ‘deep dark issues ‘of our past.

The focus is more on the present, and it is oriented on the client learning particular skills and thinking strategies. You learn to untwist your thinking modify your thoughts and by doing this, you change your behaviors. You learn to understand your negative thinking and develop a more positive and constructive attitude.

Remember – the way you think, determines your attitude, which determines your behavior.

This does not mean that you see the world with ‘rose colored glasses’. It is not about positive thinking, it’s about thinking more realistically.

Addiction Therapy & 12 Steps

In all impulse control behaviors, the reaction comes before the thinking. The thought dictates ‘I must have it’. There are cravings etc. Addiction Therapy using Cognitive techniques helps you to be less impulsive. You’ll also learn coping strategies as well as relapse prevention techniques.

If you are following a 12 step program, CBT techniques does not interfere with program in any way. Addiction therapy, is beneficial with or without belonging to the program.

Unlike psychoanalysis which can take many years to see results, with Cognitive Behavioral therapy you can see results almost immediately. Your new way of thinking becomes automatic and you’ll also have a more positive outlook on life.

It’s not about developing a positive attitude, it’s about learning new strategies and becoming empowered. This new way of thinking lasts for the rest of your life.

“I can only speak highly of this technique, because I’ve witnessed the results”

Cognitive Therapy works for both adults and teens
