Casino Theme At The Prom

by Anonymous

What is your opinion of having a high school Jr/Sr. prom with a casino theme, where the students play card games and win prizes?

-----------------------------------------------

I don't think this is the best choice of prom themes, and if I had my say, I'd choose another theme. However, like alcohol, casino's have become part of our culture, and they are here to stay.

According to the Council on Compulsive Gambling, 70 to 75 percent of those who play games of chance do so to a normal degree, 15 to 20 percent go beyond that and 5 to 8 percent become compulsive. So, most of us can gamble, without becoming compulsive gamblers.

Young people are prone to experimenting in risky behavior. Although the prom has a gambling theme, the kids should be warned that playing cards for prizes can be fun today, but it's a whole other story if you're a compulsive gambler.

As we've done with alcohol, we must empower our children with knowledge, so that they can make informed decisions, which can impact their future.
