My Husband's Drinking

by Erin Kraft
(Arlington, VA)

I have been married for almost 20 years. My husband and I met at a party and continued to meet in similar circumstances with alcohol.

He is/has become a heavy drinker, drinking every evening. He is functional enough to rise every morning and go to work, with no unforeseen problems. However, he will come home and immediately mix himself a few cocktails (whiskey, martini) and proceed to drink a few glasses of wine and later a few beers.

It has gotten out of hand. He can be verbally abusive and irritable to me. I am sometimes quite scared.

I am currently seeing a therapist for my problems. However, he does not see that he has a problem. We have two beautiful kids and I sometimes wonder if they think daddy is a bit unstable. He can be very obtuse.

When I scold him, he feels he needs to scold me back.

Thanks for listening.

Well you obviously agreed to marry this drinker, and by the way as the story goes, you're not innocent yourself. Don't try to change people who don't want to change.

Is he happy? That's the question you need to ask him. He's only human before anything else, and I'm sure he'd still be a drinker whether he's married to you or someone else. At least he gets up in the morning to go to work to provide for his family... Maybe drinking relaxes him after a hard day at work. So don't take it personally.

No one is perfect, and the way the world is going, we all need a little outlet.
