My Husband's Drinking

by Erin Kraft
(Arlington, VA)

I have been married for almost 20 years. My husband and I met at a party and continued to meet in similar circumstances with alcohol.

He is/has become a heavy drinker, drinking every evening. He is functional enough to rise every morning and go to work, with no unforeseen problems. However, he will come home and immediately mix himself a few cocktails (whiskey, martini) and proceed to drink a few glasses of wine and later a few beers.

It has gotten out of hand. He can be verbally abusive and irritable to me. I am sometimes quite scared.

I am currently seeing a therapist for my problems. However, he does not see that he has a problem. We have two beautiful kids and I sometimes wonder if they think daddy is a bit unstable. He can be very obtuse.

When I scold him, he feels he needs to scold me back.

Thanks for listening.
